Everyone who has ever towed the full length of Lekki-Epe Expressway will know the bright orange and yellow building that houses the infamous Mega Chicken. This fast food place has all but become a prize jewel along the expressway, attracting hundreds of customers daily. Located at First Gate, Ikota Estate, KM14 Lekki Epe Expressway, this restaurant offers everything from fast food options to a Chinese restaurant upstairs.

Entrance to Mega Chicken

After a rainy Wednesday morning, I decided to try out the Chinese restaurant. For some reason, I wasn’t expecting the crowd I saw upstairs as a previous visit to the restaurant offered a quiet and reflective time. The space is dimly lit and the sitting arrangement can be better to reflect the Chinese culture. Asides from a wooden wall that covered a specific space in the restaurant, it was very much like sitting in their main hall downstairs.

I was welcomed by a smiling waitress who took my order and assured me that my meal will arrive in the next 25 minutes. Nearly an hour later and two calls to the waitress and manager, my meal arrived.

My meal was a bowl of fried rice with shredded chicken and a medium plate of chicken in chilli sauce. The drink menu wasn’t impressive so I settled for the regular old Chapman. Considering the amount of time it took for my meal, I was expected to be blown away by the meal. I served my very generous bowl of rice and sauce into a side plate and began the experience.

Chicken and chilli sauce and fried rice with shredded chicken

The rice tasted really nice but I kept feeling like there was something missing to give it that particular Chinese rice taste that we’ve all come to love. The chicken in chilli sauce might have very well come in different bowls as there was no fusion of the chilli in the chicken.

I had a good time waiting for my meal and it took me less than usual to finish eating. Due to the generous servings, I had more than enough to take home.

Chapman

Will I be coming back to Mega Chicken Chinese Restaurant? Certainly not! I have had better experiences with Chinese food. I also believe they can’t handle making Chinese food due to the numerous orders they get from their regular fast food outlet and the African section, which is all catered to from the same kitchen.

Price box
Fried rice with shredded chicken: 1050
Chicken in chilli sauce: 2100
