We’re back with another review and this time we’re pretty sure you haven’t heard of this spot (fingers crossed). Barkono is located after the Apo Legislative Quarters and has a somewhat Nando’s feel to it. The space is quite small but this doesn’t take away from the vibe. It could preferably be located closer to the central area as not everyone will be willing to ‘travel’ to Apo (It’s really not as deep as the Lagos Mainland/Island debate).

Service

For a restaurant with relatively low patronage that afternoon, the food took what felt like years to arrive. However, the staff were very attentive and constantly informed us about the progress of our food. Chicken and chips certainly should not take that long.

Food

Barkono means pepper in Hausa and their menu stays within this theme, as you can get everything extra spicy (mocktails inclusive). There isn’t a wide variety of food on their menu but there’s just about enough to choose from.

The first meal was the spicy BBQ quarter chicken, served with their blazing fries. The sauce on the chicken lived up to its name, bursting with flavour and spice. Unfortunately, the chef was heavy handed with the cinnamon in the ‘blazing fries’ spice mix – still the bomb though.

The second meal was the peri peri quarter chicken and fried rice. This meal was disappointing as the peri peri chicken tasted a bit off and generally lacked that smoky taste. We would recommend going with the BBQ sauce if you settle on this meal.

Our last meal was the BBQ lamb chops with the blazing fries. The lamb was a bit too chewy but had just enough BBQ sauce to not be dry. The spices, however, came together and made it taste perfect. This was our best meal and we would definitely recommend it.

We kept things simple with the mocktails. The first was the Bee Sting, which is a combination of apple, orange, lemon juice and honey; and the second was a standard Virgin Mojito. Both mocktails were a bit too sweet but nonetheless refreshing.

Price

Their price range is definitely one of their main attractions, as the most expensive meal on the menu is about N4000 for what you get somewhere else for N6000. Thinking about it now, they might be trying to compensate for the fuel spent on getting there.

Spicy BBQ quarter chicken- N2200

BBQ lamb chops- N3400

Peri peri quarter chicken- N2200

Mocktails- N1000-1200
