The Arts and Culture Scene In 2017

The year 2016 has been one of the most amazing years in the art and culture scene as Lagos itself, the commercial capital of Nigeria has seen a hike in the number of arts and culture events unlike the previous year.

2015 ended with the Platform Exhibition at the renowned art gallery, Art Twenty One situated in the heart of Victoria Island which was well attended by art enthusiast and the media.  

Last year numerous art events were hosted as par the Art X Lagos event which took place over three days and intriguingly included a live art performance to the African Arts Foundation’s “Lagos Photo Festival” showcasing artwork from individuals across the African continent and beyond, gathering at the Eko Hotel & Suites for the grand opening amongst other locations across Lagos. On the other hand, quite fascinating, there was a town hall meeting at the Freedom Park formerly Old Broad Street Prison on the consciousness of the recently demolished Ilojo Bar/Olaiya House/Fernandez House, a national monument since 1956 and the need to restore and preserve the historical structures across Lagos and beyond.

2017 is a year to expect very intriguing and extraordinary arts and culture events, starting with the Young Contemporaries project by the Rele Art Foundation, which begins in January. This project gives young and upcoming artists a platform to express themselves through their work, an opportunity they would not have on the larger scale in the art industry in the country.
