Sculpture: A Unique Art Form

The creation and appreciation of art has always been a part of the human experience. Life as we know it would feel empty and valueless without art and the beauty it brings. Now, art in itself is expressed in a myriad of ways because of the varying feelings they evoke, through paintings, sculptures, drama and the likes.

Sculpture is perhaps the most bold and noticeable form of art and in that sense it is often used as an announcement of declaration of honor. The Lincoln Memorial for example is one of the most iconic statues to have ever been carved. It depicts Abraham Lincoln siting majestically on a throne, and is widely remembered as a figure that held the United States of America together in times of distress.

Arguably the most enduring and one of the greatest forms of fine art known to man, sculpture has played an integral role in the evolution of Western as well as African culture. Prior to the 20^th century, sculpting as an art form was exclusively representational; a three dimensional art of solid form that depicted culture and society. They were also used for ritual purposes – the Venus statues were used in rituals that were meant to ensure abundance for ancient people.

On a more modern level, the art of sculpture is no longer restricted by the traditional sculptural concepts, materials, or methods of production. It is no longer exclusively representational, but frequently abstract. This is good in its own way because it allows for a variety of thoughts and emotions; which is why some prefer them to realistic sculptures.

Whether carved out of wood, stone or other materials, sculpture tends to relate to us on a more personal basis than any other art form because it usually depicts something we’re familiar with. It’s a familiar representation of the way we live and how our senses interpret the world around us. Even till this day, albeit continuously evolving, sculpture is still the leading method of expressing and commemorating both historical figures and events.
