Our Sound….Our Culture
Culture are the ideas, customs and social behavior of a particular people or society. Our sound has been our identity even when we were not aware of what it was. No matter the language, rhythm or voice that creates the music, our soul would always understand the underlying meaning. The sound of Nigeria is unique and truly reflects the typical Nigerian; vibrant, energetic and relentless.
Somewhere along the line we can agree that we lost our voice but we find it in different generations, in different languages, played to different beats and united by different dance steps.
The true Nigerian sound speaks of hope, it boasts of self, it is driven by passion, it is historical, it is a sound that stirs memories of forgotten legends and the rise of new ones.
Slowly, it registers, our sound has become our culture and it has affected the way we do things. We’ve all heard about the American Dream; the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved. This dream was sold by the musicians and rappers, pledging their life to a country that has given them everything and growing that country. We are building the Nigerian dream, in our subconscious, we have set a ball in motion for the next generation to inspire and aspire.
It is our culture found in our songs of hope, our songs of wishes, our songs of soul, our songs of untold pain.
At the end of the day, the Nigerian sound is not all about the loud music from the boom box or from the radio. The Nigerian sound is deeper than that. It has woven a safety net for the generation to fall into, to weave into their tales of hope a story that feeds the next generation.
