Baking Soda, otherwise known as Sodium bicarbonate, is a white solid that is crystalline, but often appears as a fine powder.

Baking soda is commonly used for baking. This is because it has leavening properties that causes dough to rise by producing carbon dioxide.

Away from cooking, baking soda has numerous surprising benefits and uses:

Deodorize Smelly Sofa/Couch

Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda over your entire sofa or couch.

Leave it for at for an hour, or overnight for severe odors. The baking soda absorbs the smells from the fabric and cushions.

Freshen Your Breath

Mix 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water. Swish, spit, and rinse. Easy mouth wash that neutralizes odors.

Absorb Toilet Odors

Add a cup of baking soda to the toilet and leave it for an hour before flushing. It will clean the toilet and absorb the odor.

Freshen Your Smelly Shoes

Sprinkle baking soda directly into your shoes. Shake the shoes around to distribute the powder. Let it sit for at at least 24 hours to give the baking soda time to absorb the odor.

Alternatively, you can also make sachets filled with baking soda and stick them in your shoes.

Exfoliate Skin Gently

Baking soda will exfoliate the scarred skin and reveal a fresh layer. Make a thick paste with baking soda and water. Rub in a gentle circular motion to exfoliate the skin. You can apply the paste two or three times in a day for 3-4 minutes and then wash off. It will leave your skin soft and smooth.

Clean And Brighten Nails

Brighten your manicure by scrubbing nails and cuticles with a paste of 3 parts Baking Soda to 1 part water. Rub in a gentle, circular motion over hands and fingers to exfoliate and smooth. Rinse clean with warm water and apply polish as usual

Make Extra Fluffy Omelets

Baking powder creates air pockets in the egg which helps make it light and fluffy however adding too much baking powder can change the flavour of the egg.
Add half teaspoon of baking soda to every 3 eggs for super fluffy omelets!

Heartburn Remedy

Relieve heartburn by drinking 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 cup of water. Baking soda neutralizes stomach acids to relieve indigestion.

Clean And Restore Stained Mugs

Remove stubborn tea and coffee stains on your mugs easily. Simply sprinkle a bit of baking soda inside a wet mug and scrub!

Stop Dandruff

Baking Soda cleans the scalp and helps get rid of the dandruff flakes. Add 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda to a cup of lukewarm water. Mix this well and apply this onto your scalp. Massage gently and leave it on for a minute or two. You can then shampoo your hair as usual.
