GREECE’S top Supreme Court judge, Vassiliki Thanou, has been appointed caretaker prime minister ahead of early elections next month.

President Prokopis Pavlopoulos named Thanou after efforts to form a coalition failed. This followed PM Alexis Tsipras’s decision last week to quit and seek a new mandate for office.

Thanou, 65, becomes Greece’s first female prime minister.

Elections are expected to be scheduled for 20 September.

Mr. Tsipras was forced to call early elections after losing a number of his leftist Syriza party allies over the bailout he agreed with European creditors.

In a statement live on television last Thursday, he said it was now up to the Greek people to give their verdict on whether to continue with his government’s programme.
