Movement for the Survival of the Underprivileged (MOSUP) has decried the increasing rates of Female Genital mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) in Ondo State, urging the state government and humanitarian groups to reduce the menace.

The President of the group, Dappa Maharajah, disclosed this during an interaction with The Guardian yesterday in Akure, urging Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to rise against the obnoxious act.

According to him, Ondo State has recorded spates of FGM/C in recent times and this is common in the Akoko area of the state, exposing the girl-child to series of mental and psychological problems.

“One of the pathetic incidents in recent times is that of one Mrs. Yemisi Kolade, a mother of three, whose in-laws back home at Ikare Akoko, Akoko North-East LGA of the state demanded that her two daughters must be circumcised.”

Recounting the ordeals of the Kolades, he said the daughters, Beauty and Omobobola, who were born on November 27, 2001 and April 27, 2009 respectively, had experienced a lot of dehumanisation alongside their parents.

Maharajah revealed that the daughters were abused and subjected to a lot of inhumane treatments by the extended family, who insisted that their parents must bring them home for the family tradition.

He lamented that the family members also attempted to kidnap the girls in their schools for the family rites despite persuasions from police, human right groups and the parents to dissuade them from the evils of FGM/C.

“This is against the Child Right Act which stipulates that every child must enjoy the right to survival, development, protection and participation in all ramifications,” he said.

The Non Governmental Organisation, MOSUP, called on all Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), government agencies and religious body to put an end to the scourge in the state.
