Wife of the Delta State Governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has urged Nigerian women to actively support female politicians in the country in elections and other related political endeavours.

She said this, in a chat with newsmen at the weekend at the special 20th Anniversary celebration of the Christian women group, Virtuous Women Tuesday Fellowship (VWTF), held at Bay Lounge in Lagos.

She said, “You can not be everywhere. I might be a preacher. I might not be a good politician. The only thing I would want women to do is to try and support your neighbour. There shouldn’t be envy. If you are good in A, you might not be good in B. The one that is good in politics, let the other women come out and support her.”

She also acknowledged the importance of education to the development of sound country leaders, urging female politicians to acquire quality education for the betterment of their leadership quality.

Okowa, alongside other members of the VWTF, were awarded with plaques for their outstanding contributions to the group’s success.

Some of the other awardees included, National Co-coordinator, VWTF and her Vice, Nancy Ogboi and Folashade Alli, respectively; VWTF Lagos’ Branch coordinators, Obi Chuks (Apapa Branch); Ngozi Adele (Surulere Branch); Juli Bukunmi (Lekki Branch); Retd. Major Winifred Tinioye (Ojo Branch).

The remaining awardees were, State Branch co-ordinators, Olubunmi Igeleko (Ibadan branch); and Amaka Odili (Abuja branch); as well as other outstanding members, Victoria Akindu; and Uju Ifejika, and, finally, a post-humous award was given to a deceased member, Madam Leticia Ogunbanjo.

Speaking at the event, some of the group’s members shared their various experiences of the group’s benefits to their lives.

According to one Chinasa Njogu, the VWTF helped to positively mentor her when she was eager for a male child following her birth of three female children.

She also narrated that how even after her eventual delivery of a male child whereby the child suffered some life threatening complications, the group’s founder assisted in resolving the crisis and in her post-delivery rehabilitation.

Another member, Mrs. Folake Daniel, expressed her joy with the group’s assistance following the sudden death of her husband and how she was positively motivated to begin coping with life again.

“She (Ogboi) picked me up and helped me up like a pet project. It was like breakfast, lunch and dinner. We began to meditate on the word together. Gradually, life started coming back to me. I started to rejuvenate, little by little.”

The VWTF, according to the National co-coordinator, Mrs. Ogboi, is a Christian women group, which embraces members from all Christian denominations and seeks to empower the spiritual, emotional and financial living of their members, positively.

It also helps in community empowerment projects around the areas of its branches. The group was birthed in 1998, in Lagos.

Ogboi also stated that she envisioned the group growing enormously, bringing positive impacts to the lives of the people it encounters across the country, stating that they would soon expand to the United States of America (U.S.A.) as well as plans to expand the group’s branches locally.

The event also featured gripping and pulsating musical performances from renowned gospel musicians, BJ Sax, and Bukky Beke.

There was also an unveiling of the first edition of the Christian oriented Virtuous Women Magazine to the pleasure of the delighted audience.
