Weekend review

It’s official; weekends are a God-sent period in which one can relax, unwind and recover from the physical and mental torture that weekdays can bring.

After a week of dodging keke’s, screaming at drivers (Including your own) and smiling benignly at co-workers when you would rather be beating them into the floor with your shoe, you deserve an outlet or two. Here are this weekend’s suggestions:

Pamper yourself: book a spa weekend, a beauty retreat or a simple staycation, because it’s the weekend and you deserve to enjoy every fleeting second of it. My recommendations would be Barazahi for a decadent body scrub and sauna experience, complete with  a delightful professional to massage you like a piece of meat. If you would however like a more traditional African spa experience, complete with organic herbs and ointments from across Northern Nigeria, try The Henna Place.

In 2016 it has also become interesting to note that the Gym has become the new Club. Health aficionados everywhere are seeking new ways and new spaces to get fit. Because jogging on the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge (or any other bridge for that matter) may simply not be for you, join a recreational/country club or better still, get yourself invited to one. Ikoyi Club 1938 is one of the oldest and most reputable in Lagos, boasting of multiple sections including swimming, badminton, tennis, squash and 18-hole golf course in the heart of Ikoyi. Membership to this exclusive club comes with a weighty price tag and requires the right connections, but when you get it, the many perks make it worth it.

Food will always be a reliable way to comfort and soothe the troubles of the week away and a place becoming a place of serenity, comfort and good food for me is Craft and Gourmet by Lou Baker in Victoria Island. While some of the flavours on the menu might take some getting used, the delightful owner couple make the experience a complete pleasure and often have helpful suggestions on what to try.  Sometimes however the craving is not for fine dining or new experiences, it is for comfort food and one of the best places for this is BBQ and Cravings in Lekki.
Chef Olumide specializes in slow grilling the food served to perfection; from succulent burgers to mouth watering steaks. the best part is they deliver. Get involved!

Ultimately, a cosy self-cinema date might be just the thing your doctor ordered. This weekend, check out the film North East starring Oc Ukeje, Indima Okojie and Carol King, showing in cinemas across the country starting this weekend. Other great movie option with fantastic reviews are Now You See Me 2 starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and Nice Guys with Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, and Angourie Rice. It’s an action comedy and it promises a good laugh and some thrills

And finally what is your weekend without an appropriate soundtrack; refreshing sounds have just dropped from Tomi Thomas in the form of The Black Couch LP. A Nigerian artist based in Dubai, Tomi is a diverse musical distraction with beats ranging from reggae to r&b and trap, with features including a host of new-school artist like Santi, Tay, Bridge and Bris B of LOS.

A final refreshing indulgence in the music space this weekend is the artist Falana who, starting this weekend and continuing every month until September, will be sharing her new music with Lagos in a series of pop-up concerts (for tickets and info check out www.afritickets.com) which is a big deal for this talented artist.
