Students of Kwara State Polytechnic’s (KP) Mass Communication department, have appealed to the Rector of the institution, Dr. Abdul-Jimoh Mohammed, to facilitate action on the takeoff of Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in the department, so as to have a seamless polytechnic education.

Hitherto, academic programmes for Mass Communication students in the school stop at Ordinary National Diploma (OND), and the students are made to seek admission in other schools for their HND programmes

The Guardian gathered that the majority of the Mass Communication students, who graduated after OND, find it difficult to complete their polytechnic education because of the absence of HND in their department.

They alleged constant rejection of their application to other institutions with their OND results.

An alumnus, Mariam Ibrahim, who attested to this claim, said, “I graduated in 2016 and I have been applying with my OND to other institutions for HND, but I have not been admitted. It would have been easier for me to secure admission in my school, if only they had established HND programme in our department.”

A student of the school, Boluwatife Abdullah, on her part, revealed that she was ignorant of the fact that the polytechnic had not established HND for mass communication department before applying to the institution.

She said: “I only realised after I was offered the admission and was disheartened by it. Even my grandparents scolded me for not making thorough investigations before applying due to slim chances of securing admission elsewhere.”

The students, however, have called on the state government under the leadership of AbdulRahmon AbdulRazaq to come to their aid.
