Families of the deposed Olugbo of Ugbo, Dr. Adebanjo Mafimisebi, have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the police to stop flouting court order and desist from infringing on the fundamental human rights of the people.

Families of the deposed Olugbo of Ugbo, Dr. Adebanjo Mafimisebi, have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the police to stop flouting court order and desist from infringing on the fundamental human rights of the people.

They demanded the immediate and unconditional release of some persons who were allegedly arrested by the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan at Ode-Igbo, Ilaje Local Government of Area (LGA) of Ondo State on April 6, 2018 unlawfully.

The Guardian gathered that a septuagenarian, Adefemi Mafimisebi and Wemimo Mafimisebi were arrested and detained on the said date.

Consequently, Mafinisebi and four others filed an action at the state high court with suit No: AK/29M/2018, joining the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Idris, the Commissioner for Police, Ondo State, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju and Akinruntan as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents.

Addressing a press conference in Akure last Wednesday, the counsel to the family, Idowu Mafimisebi, accused the IGP and Ondo State Police Command of flouting the decisions of the court by detaining his clients for more than 126 days.

Justice W.A. Akintoroye of the state high court, Akure had ruled that the molestation, arrest and detention of the applicants were “barbaric, capricious, oppressive and illegal.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd respondents from further arresting the 1st to 7th applicants. An order that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th applicants be released from custody of the 1st and 2nd respondents or any custody at all, immediately and unconditionally,” he ordered.

The court also awarding N10 million damages against all the respondents and asked them to tender public apology for breaching their fundamental human rights and dignity in at least two National dailies.
