Sunfit raises alarm on rising cases of lifestyle-related deaths

o-DEATH-TUNNEL-facebookOver 14.2 million people between the ages of 30 to 69 years die prematurely each year globally as a result of diseases, which includes high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and obesity among others.

Based on the development and prevalence of these new breeds of diseases, christened ‘lifestyle Disease’, the Management of Sunfit, Meridian Cardiac Center, Festac, Lagos, in collaboration with Amuwo Odofin Local Government have organised a ‘Fitness and Health Week’ from November 16th to 22nd, 2015.

The programme which was organized specially for the populace of Amuwo odofin and it environs, aimed at educating the general public and raising awareness on health issues related with lifestyle choices as well as curbing the resultants of lifestyle diseases.

Featuring at the programme was the following activities: health talks on lifestyle related ailment, smart diet choices, benefits of exercise; health screening for the general public including blood pressure, body mass index, blood glucose and waist to hip ratio checks; free medical consultation based on health screening; visit to corporate organizations, religious gatherings and other public places for medical sampling and questionnaire assessment.

The General Manager of Sunfit Mrs. Kelechi Ononiwu, spoke during the programme saying the program was mostly focused on promoting general lifestyle as the public awareness of lifestyle disease is very low. Hence, people indulge in poor lifestyle choices like smoking, bad eating habit, poor physical activities, just to mention but a few.

Ononiwu who made known that the programme has catapulted the team to different places: “we have gone to different places, and from the test we have conducted so far, a lot of people and majority percentage are unhealthy and unaware of the prevalent disease and were at work with critical cases, which on normal occasion would be termed emergency case.To some who were aware, have overtime not checked their health status.”

She noted that people play with their health and take things pertaining to their health unserious: ”People find themselves in poor unhealthy places thereby jeopardizing their well-being.”
