Eleven students from Nigerian tertiary institutions have pitched different innovations to solve technological and societal problems.

Three winners will be empowered with N3 million start-up capital at the end of the innovative challenge, which held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The students picked problems confronting the society such as security and crime and proffered solutions. There were innovations on how to avoid convicting the wrong persons for crimes they did not really commit while the actual criminal walks the streets free as well as organic waste conversion potentials.

The vice-chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said students should key into the vision of innovation and entrepreneurship, stressing that for anyone to succeed in these times, they must come up with new ideas and solve problems in the society.

“The institution already has plans to register companies for well-grounded students in entrepreneurship. We are bringing all of their skills into focus, be it blogging, modeling, others, and making sure we empower and encourage them. We will empower any student that is able to come up with brilliant ideas.

While lamenting the multi-faceted problems confronting the nation, dean, faculty of science, Prof Adedotun Adekunle, said many of these problems could be solved using science and technology, especially through research and innovation by students.
