President, Non Communicable Disease (NCD) Alliance Nigeria, Dr. Sonny Kuku, has said strengthening Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and strategic advocacy can reduce the burden of NCDs across the country.Kuku noted the imperatives of advocacy in establishing activities towards prevention and control of NCDs at all strata, globally, nationally even at community levels.

He added that the NCD Alliance Nigeria has played pivotal roles in the past in providing leadership for coordinated action and a united voice on the prevention of NCDs in Nigeria.

The president, at a plenary session on “Advocacy Tools for CSOs in NCDs, Primary Health Care Centres and Media Houses” said the workshop is to strengthen CSOs and related organisations on advocacy tools.

He continued: “NCD has provided a platform for a nationwide alliance of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Diabetes Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Heart Foundation and the Nigerian Thoracic Society with an aim to providing a united mechanism for a framework within which the different actors can plan, act together and ensure that Nigerians enjoy good quality of life free from NCDs and their adverse effects.”

The NCD Alliance Nigeria boss highlighted that it is in pursuit of this aim that NCD Alliance Nigeria earlier in Abuja in June 2019 organised a workshop aimed at developing effective advocacy strategies for NCDs CSOs. Kuku said the workshop was an eye opener as it enabled the NCDs Alliance see the plethora of advocacy tools for NCDs NGOs in Nigeria as the participants provided the perspectives on strategic advocacy tools required to make significant impact in the prevention and control of NCDs in Nigeria.

The president noted that the major outcome of the workshop would be the increase awareness and understanding of their cause, sharpening of tools for advocacy objectives with Government at all levels and other relevant stakeholders.
