WORRIED about the rising incidence of diabetes in the country, renowned Pharmaceutical company, Sanofi Avensis Nigeria have advocated for an increased awareness and effective medical management to stem the non-communicable disease.

Speaking during the launch of the new Insulin product recently in Lagos, Head of Medical and Regulatory, Sanofi Nigeria/Ghana, Dr. Inoussa Fiffen noted that globally it is estimated that 382 million people suffer from diabetes for a prevalence of 8.3 per cent, with 50 per cent undiagnosed which justifies the need to raise awareness on diabetes and its effects on human health with a view to preventing it.

According to him, diabetes is a disease that has caused a lot of death in Nigeria, and the world at large, which makes it one of the largest burdens in the world.

He opined that the number of people with diabetes may be on the increase because there are so many predisposing factors that are all over the place, which includes; the kind of foods we eat; culture, lifestyle and other things that happen to us.

“These are all signposts of an imminent danger in the increase of the number of people living with diabetes that makes it needful to expand the message horizon by talking to communities, peoples, and healthcare providers as almost half of the people with diabetes remain undiagnosed,” he added.
