Hygeia conference to address mental health, challenges in accessing care

As part of measures to reduce the rising incidences of suicide in Nigeria, Hygeia Health Maintenance Organisation’s (HMO) has said its third yearly health and exhibition conference will focus on addressing human mental health.

As part of measures to reduce the rising incidences of suicide in Nigeria, Hygeia Health Maintenance Organisation’s (HMO) has said its third yearly health and exhibition conference will focus on addressing human mental health.

The conference, themed: “Healthcare in Nigeria: Transformative Solutions”, which is billed for Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Oriental Hotel, Lekki – Epe Expressway, Victoria Island, Lagos by 9am, according to the HMO, will also proffer solutions that will reset the Nigerian healthcare system and structures to inject efficiency and effectiveness into the system to help build a system that works for all Nigerians

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer, Hygeia HMO, Obinnia Abajue noted Hygeia’s primary focus on mental health is to reduce the incidences of suicide in Nigeria as a result of depression. “Conversations about depression and suicide are developing daily. We want to deliberate solution and we don’t want depression issue to escalate. Experts will be coming around to speak on what should be done to improve mental health,” he said.

Speaking on the importance of the health conference, Abajue said the conference will bring together under one roof major players in the health sector, who will brainstorming on how healthcare value chain can work effectively and draft policies that will enhance the sector. “The key stakeholder groups in the healthcare sector will discuss and proffer practical, workable and actionable solutions to the challenges of healthcare in Nigeria,” he said. “In 2017 we began with the idea of having a conference to bring all the stake holders reminding them of their roles in the health sector.

Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world and if we look at healthcare today and as time goes on we will discover that the number of people who will not have access to healthcare will grow.

“Our healthcare conference is designed to bring issues to the fore and ensuring Nigerian get access to quality healthcare. Along side we will have conversation with different stakeholders on how we can improve on healthcare services. It will include people that are involve the value chain because the essence of this is to ensure the entire system work for good,” he explained

He emphasised that the most sustainable way to ensure people have access to healthcare is through HMOs. “At the conference, we will be looking at how the HMOs will work for everybody. We want to see how we can take the healthcare to another level and how we can make our system work for us.

“Healthcare Nigeria Conference 2019 is an opportunity to Network with key stakeholders, manufacturers, dealers and distributors, medical practitioners and investors,” he said.
