Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Lanre Tejuosho has called for a rejig in the nation’s health institutions to stem medical tourism.

Speaking during the committee’s oversight visit to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, he said, the appropriation for the institutions was drawn to improve the hospitals.

“We are in LUTH to see how far they have gone before we appropriate again for 2109. We are happy to see the level of work going on here. The Chief Medical Director (CMD), LUTH, has given us a date in January for the commissioning of the new cancer centre. We are also happy to see renovation of wards,” he said.

Tejuosho added that they are really looking forward to the success of all the projects so that people will stop flying to other countries on health ground.

“I commend the management of LUTH for keeping their promise to ensure that the money allocated to them was spent judiciously. We are also happy about the minimum wage upgrade the issue of the salary the CMD mentioned. It has been redirected to the ministries for budget and health for due processing at the National Assembly so that we can do the needful,” he added.

CMD, LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode, said the hospital has engaged different Public Private Partnership (PPP) because government cannot do it alone. He thanked the committee on their efforts in improving the healthcare delivery across the country and stated that LUTH will continue to do all it can to optimise service delivery.
