Registrar of trade union risks committal over alleged contempt

The Registrar of Trade Unions of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mrs. Nwanyieze Mbogu risks prison sentence for allegedly refusing to comply with the order of the Court of Appeal.
   
She was directed by the court of appeal to change and issue a new certificate in the name of Agricultural and Allied Union of Nigeria (AAUN) and immediately commence the process of the change of name to AAUN after the merger of the defunct Agricultural and Allied Workers Union of Nigeria (AAWUN) and Agricultural and Allied Employees of Nigeria (AAEUN).
  
The committal became imminent after a contempt proceeding sailed through at a Federal High Court, Lagos which considered and determined the merit of the motion brought by the union seeking certificate of registration and 13 others against the Registrar and the national president of AAEUN, Abdullahi Bungudu.

The letter, which was signed by one I. A. Gazali on behalf of the AGF, also advised Mrs. Mbogu to give recognition to the Agricultural and Allied Union of Nigeria (AAUN). This directive, the plaintiff said is no complied with yet.
  
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment by a letter to the two unions, acknowledged their agreement and their appeal to the Court of Appeal for a consent judgment to be registered under one umbrella known as AAUN and asked them to contact the ministry as soon as the judgment is obtained.
  
The unions has since replied the letter after the consent judgment was obtained, yet the ministry has not deemed it fit to prevail on the Registrar of Trade Unions to implement the judgment and the order of court, they said.
