Rector urges frequent discourse on security

To help tackle the security challenges confronting the country, Rector, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Obafemi Omokungbe has urged members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in the college to routinely conduct international conferences on security. 

Omokungbe who spoke at the second International Conference on Science, Technology, Engineering and Humanity (ICSTEH) themed, “Technological applications and management for global security, “organised by ASUP described the theme as very apt and timely. 

According to him, “Security is a major challenge globally and particularly to our nation. The ideas to be generated from the conference will serve as the contributions of the sector to national discourse in this respect. The global security issues range from terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, cyber-crimes, kidnapping, environmental degradation among others. Security is a serious issue all over the world. It is my hope that the participants in their discussions will take a hard look at possible solutions for world peace.

He highlighted that one major key objective of the college is to design and apply effective teaching, research and learning techniques for academic excellence. 

Omokungbe noted that the college has sponsored 331 members of staff for various training and conferences within a period of two years. 

“This is in addition to those who have benefited from TETFund grant. This conference, therefore, is in the same direction with the institution with respect to human capacity building and intellectual stimulation as it is expected that the conference papers to be presented and the discourse that follows will bring about innovations that will challenge academics,” he added

The guest speaker, Prof. Amos Aremu of the Department of Guidance and Counseling, University of Ibadan (UI) expressed deep concern over the current security situation in the country. 

The university teacher hinted that state police with constant surveillance of the environment by security personnel would address the situation a great deal.
 
He advocated better remuneration of the police, insurance cover, provision of sophisticated ammunitions, removal of force from the word Nigeria Police Force and complete adoption of the American policing system.
