Qualitative learning prepares students for 21st century challenges, says expert

A university teacher, Dr. Seun Ebiesuwa has identified quality education as necessary tool needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Ebiesuwa who is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Babcock University spoke at the youth empowerment programme of the institution.

At the event titled “Becoming the best of yourself “, Ebiesuwa noted that every talent must be utilised.

“Every talent is crude and raw hence will only be used to the fullest when such talent has been cultivated or refined.”

He further noted that self-discovery is fundamental in fulfiment of life and would involve identifying genuine aptitude and interest completely to devoid prejudices.

According to him, “one must objectively define between the things you are passionate about and those things you do to merely fulfill an expectation; identify that activity you enjoy doing so much without anybody policing you and find out that thing you do far better than most people, decipher that thing others give you compliments and accolades for most of the time, discover that activity you would conveniently do regardless of whether you rehearsed or not and identify things you enjoy doing even if you are not paid”.

He therefore admonished them to devote their time and resources to learn as much as they can adding that they should identify icons of excellence who are pace setters in that discipline and choose them as role models

“Read or watch biographies of these persons as it would help you to learn the ropes, set targets for yourself and after each milestone you accomplish set a new target immediately and shun complacency as much as possible.

A talent can be likened to a metallic ore, which is always crude and unrefined at the point of extraction from the belly of the earth.

“The real metal such as gold, silver, bronze and diamond, which is appreciated, only becomes appealing after the crude metallic ore is passed through a refinement process, which involves subjecting the ore to heat. Every talent is crude and raw hence, will only be used to the fullest extent when such talent has been cultivated or refined.”

He therefore said education helps to refine one’s talent irrespective of whether that talent is academically oriented or not.

In his remarks, the deputy vice chancellor, Prof. Sunday Owolabi said the event was aimed at encouraging the young ones on the need to be hardworking and successful.
