A partner in Consolex law firm, Dr. Omogbai Omo-Eboh has urged the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to prosecute insurance offenders through the fiat of the attorney general of the federation.

According to Omo-Eboh, police should stop handling insurance offences. His words: “If a man commits an insurance offence, he either go through the police, or better still the office of the attorney general of the federation or the attorney general of the state. I think that gap needs to be looked into.”

Omo-Eboh, who made the statement at the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) Insurance and Pensions committee first annual seminar in Lagos, said insurance companies have been doing a lot to overcome their challenges.

The event, with the theme, “Insurance penetration: the role of law and regulation, had other speakers such as the executive director, Leadway Assurance Company limited, Ms. Adetola Adegbayi, head of legal/company secretary, NAICOM, Dr. Talmiz Usman as well as Professor Chioma Agomo of the department of commercial and industrial law, University of Lagos.

Also, the chairman of the committee on insurance and pension of NBA-SBL, Mr. Dominic Ichaba said uncertainties and unforeseen eventualities are the undesirable part of our world and therefore urged Nigerians to embrace insurance.

“Insurance penetration is low in Nigeria because most people and organizations fail to take insurance to cover risks,” he said and urged the insurance regulator and operators to champion the drive for insurance penetration.

Meanwhile, the chairman of NBA-SBL, Mr. Olumide Akpata has said his Council is committed to the training of young lawyers.

Akpata who spoke at a separate event with law editors, said SBL wants to create SBL clubs at the faculties of law so as to introduce areas that are not in their present curricula to the law student early enough.

“We are going to pick 12 universities and we will take our committees there, have lectures with the students, because there are some subject matters that are not been treated. We are going to split it into federal, private and state universities across the country,” he said.

Akpata, who gave an insight of his vision, said SBL under him is poised to strengthen its 18 committees, with a view to ensuring that they fulfill their mandates.

He stated that an additional committee would soon come on board, adding that in compliance NBA directive that they move their activities outside Lagos, the law practice management committee would hold its seminar in Port Harcourt, November 3.

“We are focused on capacity building of Nigeria lawyers, ensuring that we promote specialization, ensuring that even though we recognize that the economy that we operate in does not encourage specialization, but we must still do our best to ensure that we do the needful in spite of our circumstances. We are promoting specialization through our committees, to ensure that our committees were up and running,” he explained.
