Law alumni of the University of Jos have been advised to play greater role in the growth and development of their alma mater.

The advise was given by former Executive Director, Advancement Office, University of Jos, Prof. Victor S. Dugga, in a lecture on “The Role of Alumni in Educational Development”, which he delivered at the reunion of the Law Class of 91 of the Faculty of Law of the University recently.

According to him, what makes a great university is a great alumni association. “Alumni are products of the university, the same way NASCO has biscuits, as its product. The University produced you, you are the evidence that the University is doing well. Alumni reflect the quality of the university. There is a relationship between alumni and ranking of the university. The top 10 universities in the world are ranked based on alumni giving.”

He urged lecturers to be friendly with their students, as it would encourage them to give back to the university after graduation. He said Faculty of Law, and indeed, other faculties should have a structure of engaging Alumni. He said students want to learn in a conducive environment and when they have good memories of their days in school, they are more likely to contribute towards the growth and development of their alma mater when they graduate.

The Class also paid a courtesy visit on the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sebastine S. Maimako but were received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Nelson Ochekpe.

The Director of Alumni Relations, Mr Samuel C. Mwansat said they were privileged to host a set of Alumni in the University, adding that it justifies the reason for upgrading the Alumni Unit to a full Directorate. He said the Directorate of Alumni Relations will support the set to have a wonderful 25th anniversary.

The Leader of the delegation, Hon. Justice Dennis Maduechesi, who is a High Court Judge in Awka, Anambra State, said :” Today we are coming home. We left here in 1991 and since then we remained one family. We were 120 in our class, and we are in touch with one another, even though we lost some of our classmates over the years.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Sebastine S. Maimako, represented by the DVC (Academic) said: “As a university, we are proud to have two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANS) in the Faculty of Law. We are not looking at you as students any more, but as honourable Alumni members. Whatever you see in the Faculty that you don’t like, do something about it.”

The class donated computers worth N3 million and Law books worth N1 million to the Faculty as well as various endowments and annual cash prize for best performing students.
