Participants at ‘Buharimetre Quiz Competition’ rate APC government low

Participants at Buharimetre Quiz Competition organised by the Centre for Democracy and Good Governance (CDGG) were unanimous in their resolution against the All Progressives Congress (APC) as they rated the administration low in its performance.

Fourteen secondary schools drawn across the Lagos metropolis participated in the competition, which centred on government and civic education.

At the end of the programme, which held at Radio Lagos/ Eko FM multipurpose hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Anwar ul Islam Model College, Agege emerged winner, while Igbobi College, Yaba and Holy Child College, Ikoyi came second and third respectively.

Winners were rewarded with computer systems, books and other educational materials.

In his remarks, Programme Officer, CDGG, Dr Dotun Akanni explained that ‘Buharimetre’ is an independent platform to track some of the campaign promises of the president.

“Prior to his election in 2015, he made some promises to the citizenry that when he assumes power, he will do those things and we documented them, they were actually 222 in number. What we do is that we fact checked and determine the progress on the promises made.

On students’ involvement in the project, Akanni pointed out that as leaders of tomorrow, they should be actively involved in governance.

On his part, the Executive Secretary, Human and Environmental Development Agenda, Arigbabu Sulaiman Olawale said the competition is to track how the present administration has fared in terms of the promises made to the people in the wake of the 2015 elections.

“This debate is to see how the youths are familiar with their world, their country and with the proper values and more importantly, to make them politically aware that government has a responsibility just as they too have responsibilities as citizens. We believe that every opportunity you have to expose young people to aptitude and attitude improvement is part of building leadership.”
