Olowo of Owo and Chancellor of University of Jos (UNIJOS), Oba (Prof) Olateru Olagbegi (CFR), has promised to take advantage of his new appointment and contribute his quota to the country’s educational advancement.

He made the disclosure in his palace while playing host to a delegation from the institution, which also delivered to him, all the paraphernalia of office as the new chancellor.

The delegation led by the school’s Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Governing Council, Atuekong Don Etiebet, comprised of all principal officers of the institution and council members.

Olagbegi was appointed chancellor by former President Goodluck Jonathan on May 1, 2015.

In his remarks, the monarch assured the delegation of his unrelenting commitment to the development of education in the country, adding that being offered an opportunity to serve in UNIJOS, he would contribute immensely to taking the institution to higher heights.

He enjoined the youths and indeed Nigerians to cherish the virtue of hard work and live honestly as “there is always a pay-back time.”

Etiebet in his remarks described the monarch’s appointment as “a well-deserved one, and an acknowledgement of the notable achievements of Olagbegi in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, and as vice chancellor in the universities of Benin and Abuja among others.

“We are very glad, happy and elated to have you as our chancellor,” Etiebet said, adding that the monarch was joining the services of the institution at a time of change, when the education sector needs people like him mostly.

Etiebet, a former Petroleum Resources Minister and former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), declared that the wealth of experience garnered by the monarch would considerably help to improve the standard of education in the institution.

Vice chancellor of the school, Prof. Hagward Mafuyai in his remarks thanked the chancellor for accepting the appointment, as well as his avowed support for the institution, which he said would celebrate its 40th year anniversary in September.

Mafuyai, who described UNIJOS as the third most-sought-after varsity in northern Nigeria remarked that the institution has enjoyed unusual level of peace and tranquility, despite the constant crises that is ravaging the North.

“By JAMB’s statistics of the last admission, University of Jos is ninth on the list of most preferred institutions in the entire country, and in the northern part of the country, we are the third most preferred university after University of Ilorin and Ahmadu Bello University.
