The Lagos State chapter of Nigerian Labour congress (NLC) women committee has called for more involvement of women in all strata of the nation’s economy as well as decision-making bodies of government.

Speaking on this year’s theme for international women’s day; “Repositioning women for leadership positions-Challenges and realities”, the committee said the call was informed by the need to encourage women to rise up to leadership challenges among other critical roles, where women have not been adequately represented.

NLC’s Chairperson women committee Mrs. Olubunmi Abikoye, said: ‘‘in the past, women had very little input in decision making in Africa. This has improved tremendously overtime but there are still limitations in the minds of most women causing them to shy away from leadership roles’’.

She added that, ‘‘every women should step out of their comfort zones. Every human being enjoys his or her place of comfort. Exceptional people however have learnt the art of pursuing their dreams irrespective of their distraction, discouragement, discomfort or doubts.

Abikoye also stressed that, “the challenges women faced are not limited to positions, even at workplace, female workers are subjected to inequality and discrimination. Not only do they receive less pay for the same type of work as other male workers, they are less likely to rise up to the top of their career.

She urged the government to “technically” rescue the Chibok girls the same way the government “technically “defeated Boko Haram, so that Nigeria’s victory over terrorism can be complete.

Speaking in the same vein, the guest speaker, Honuarable Kehinde Odeleye said it was time women took their rightful position in the affairs of the nation.
Odeleye said: “Women should learn to arrange themselves properly without allowing distraction of their domestic duties to make them lose focus rather be determined to give it all it takes without hindrance from men”

Besides she urged women to position themselves rightly and be ready to give each other the support needed, “because in unity they can make it without any stopping by men.

“Female are mightier than some men even at workplace, homes, schools, business and politics, and its my believe that if you train one women, it just like you training a nation, it high time to give them the opportunity to handle top position,” Odeleye said.
