New magazine, Gourmet, provides guide on Agriculture

The Gourmet Guide Magazine has been officially launched in Lagos with the theme: “Imagine a world without food, drinks and agriculture.”

Chairman, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Prince Wale Oyekoya, in his opening remarks said that the lack of food today is one of the major reasons of poverty in the nation.

He gave a brief insight on the relevance of agriculture to human existence stating: “Without food, most of us would not be here today.”

Pastor Isaac Owolabi chipped in to buttress his points that it has been scientifically proven that a man can do without food for about 70 days but anything other than that the man would die.

Special Adviser to the former Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adeshina, Dr. Kayode Oyeleye, said: “Food is an integral part of our living. It is needed to nourish our system, combat diseases and also for our survival. In past times, food has caused issues and disturbances due to individuals not taking it as a major priority and therefore being lackadaisical about their diets, which in turn leads to malnourishment and leaving their body exposed to infections.”

Oyeleye also discussed about the nature of food “we eat being responsible for longevity and the reason why some individuals perform well below average, talking about foods such as vegetables, which are rich in minerals, vitamins and protein being able to prevent diseases and some major health issues as well as nuts and seeds which helps in reducing inflammation in all parts of the body.

He indicated major factors that impact negatively in food production as climate change. “This being the reason why scientist are resorting to genetically modified foods to help humanity due to change in weather which affects growth of crops giving an example of Ukraine which decided to stop the export of wheat due to extreme heat, issues on environment. “We as a country being able to produce our food and export them to other countries, and also economic policies.”

Oyeleye noted that this as the major issue at international level saying Nigeria is the largest producer of cowpea but we still import because what we produce does not satisfy a significant percentage of our population.
