The Nigeria Agriculture Land Development Agency (NALDA) has concluded plans to establish integrated farm estates across the 109 senatorial districts.

The Nigeria Agriculture Land Development Agency (NALDA) has concluded plans to establish integrated farm estates across the 109 senatorial districts.

The Executive Director of NALDA, Paul Ikonne, who disclosed this during a briefing to mark his one-year in office, said the programme under the National Youth Farm Scheme, is expected to engage at least 1,500 farmers in each of the states.

The farm estates, according to him, would have poultry, rabbit, and fish pens and provision for crop farming, processing and storage plants, clinics, residential areas, schools, training centers, as well as an administrative facility.

Ikonne disclosed that the project has since commenced in Ogun, Anambra, Ekiti and Ebonyi states, with land clearing ongoing, while in Katsina and Borno states the project is between 30-80 per cent completed, adding that the prototype of the project would be replicated in the 109 senatorial districts, subject to availability of land.

He noted that the animal husbandry programme of the authority, which includes rabbit and goat rearing in some pilot states, has recorded success. “This programme has been a huge success as they have harvested over 30,000 litres of rabbit urine and 1,000kg of rabbit droppings to be used as fertiliser, having subjected it to lab analysis and the rabbit farmers are making income from this.”

He disclosed that NALDA has recovered abandoned farm estates in Gombe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kebbi, Oyo, Imo, Katsina, Lagos, Ekiti, Delta, Bauchi, Yobe, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi, Osun, Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Abia states, and has started reactivating them in phases.
