Mercedes unveils roomier, tech-loaded E class

One day after Mercedes-Benz teased the E-class coupe, the latest member of the E-class family has officially been revealed.

The 2018 E-class coupe features an aggressive front end, including a long sculpted hood, while the rear is similar to that of the S-class and C-class coupes.

Four frameless side windows and the absence of a B-pillar give the car a flowing profile.

“With its clear, aesthetic lines, our new E-class Coupe appeals equally to the heart and mind,” development chief for Mercedes parent Daimler AG, Thomas Weber said in a statement.

He added: “It combines contemporary luxury, agile sportiness and high-tech engineering into an automotive personality with spirit, offering exclusive, refined driving pleasure.”

The coupe follows the redesigned E-class sedan, which went on sale in late June, and E400 4Matic wagon, which is expected in early 2017.

Like the sedan, the coupe moved to Mercedes’ new Modular Rear-wheel-drive Architecture.

The E-class coupe now checks in at 190 inches long, 4.8 inches longer than its predecessor; 56.3 inches tall, up 1.3 inches from the previous generation; and 73.2 inches wide, without mirrors, up 2.9 inches from its predecessor.

Mercedes said the “significantly larger footprint” will give passengers extra legroom, front and rear shoulder rnologyoom and headroom.

In terms of power, Mercedes kept the 3.0-liter V-6 biturbo engine in the E400 and E400 4Matic. The engine produces 329 hp and 354 pounds-feet of torque and is matched with a standard nine-speed automatic transmission.

The E400 coupe can hit 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

Inside, there is a standard 12.3-inch high-resolution Comand display with touch control buttons on the steering wheel.

A 12.3-inch digital wide-screen instrument cluster is available, which can be selected by the driver in three styles: classic, sport and progressive.

Mercedes says, the coupe is significantly more intelligent than its predecessor and shares technical similarities with the E-class sedan, including active brake assist, which is standard. The program can autonomously apply the brakes if necessary and detect pedestrians crossing in the zone ahead of the vehicle.
