Nestle partners NUJ, DAME to promote nutrition reporting
Nestle Nigeria has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) and Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) Trust Fund to empower media professionals in the area of nutrition and health reporting by instituting a Nestle Prize for Nutrition Reporting to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence.
Founded upon the ideals that the media is the watchdog of the society as well as the fourth estate if the realm, Diamond Awards for Media Excellence is an award scheme that covers the media disciplines of journalism, broadcasting and advertising.
While speaking on the importance of the partnership at the signing ceremony, Managing Director of Nestle Nigeria, Mauricio Arlacon, said the firm strongly believes that when provided with adequate information and training, the media plays a key role in raising awareness of key nutrition, health and wellness issues among stakeholders and the general public.He said, “We are confident that this partnership will provide a good platform to equip journalist with training and capacity building opportunities to help them perform at optimal levels.”
Arlacon said Nestle believes that promoting healthy nutrition habits as well as providing access to nutritious foods will have a positive impact on Nigeria’s health profile.Also in his remarks, Chairman, NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr. Qasim Akinreti, said the initiative would not only motivate members of the union, but also help them work towards achieving the sustainable development goals which health is inclusive.
On behalf of DAME, Lanre Idowu, said the partnership would give the much needed attention and recognition to exceptional nutritional writers and as well stimulate interest in nutrition writing. Nigeria currently grapples with the challenges of associated with the triple burden of nutrition – under nutrition, over nutrition and micronutrient.
