Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, the Hon Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs has been honoured with the year 2017 Amir Hajj award by the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, during its yearly media conference held last weekend at Alausa Secretariat mosque. The award was presented to the commissioner by the conference chairman and Chairman of UNILAG Muslim Community, Prof. Lai Olurode, who said it was an honour well deserved by the commissioner for superintending a hitch free, highly spiritually rewarding and very successful Hajj operation in 2017.

Olurode then commended the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who he said provided support and facilities that made it possible for AbdulLateef to achieve the outstanding feat.

In his opening remarks and goodwill message on behalf of Governor Ambode, the commissioner thanked media practitioners for their partnership with the government as reflected in projecting and documenting Ambode’s achievements. He, however, charged them to give prominence to achievements recorded in incremental manner, as they occurred rather than waiting only for the big bang exploits.

He informed the gathering that through many of his innovative, multi-faceted and integrated projects (highways, railways, stadium, park, hotel in one location) scattered across the state, such as in Oshodi, Agege and Badagry axis, Ambode’s administration is on course in his drive for greater Lagos that will work for all.

While expressing Ambode’s determination to continue his policy of participatory governance, he said the media and other segments of Lagos society must continue to support the governor to project and protect his legacies

And in the keynote address, AbdulLateef enjoined Muslim media practitioners to have adequate knowledge of Islam and Quranic injunctions, appropriate passion for such issues and necessary determination to publish, and give correct and analytical reports on the issues affecting Islam and Muslims to the people, adding, “No one can do it for you; no one can do it better as you.”

Mrs. Folashade Lediju, who represented the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Adebule, praised media practitioners for their support for Ambode’s administration. She said Muslim media practitioners needed to do more to remove stereotypes and prejudice against Muslims.

Also present at the event were prominent Muslim media practitioners and academia such as Alhaji Liad Tella from Mass Communication Department, University of Ilorin, Dr. Quasim Akinreti, Alhaji Abdulkabir Alabi Garuba, Chairman, Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, Prof Latin Akintola (LASU) among others.
