Journalists and information officers have been tasked to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession as they contribute their quota to the actualisation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Commissioner for Information, Ebonyi State, Sen. Emmanuel Onwe, gave the charge at the opening of a one-day training programme for Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) advocacy and training of information officers and journalists in Abakaliki recently.

According to Onwe, “The key duty of the journalist is only to report events as they unfold. You should not add or remove anything from an event you are reporting about.”

In her remark, coordinator of SDGs, Ebonyi State, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, said the training became necessary in order for the press to accurately report the progress recorded so far in the bid to actualise the Sustainable development Goals in the State.

“The press must do the right thing by reporting accurately so that the people will understand their messages,” she said. “Information is power and it is only when they are conveyed accurately that it can be understood.”

Three media moguls – Messrs Anya Okorie, Abia Onyike and Rex Eze – delivered lectures on Editorial Writing, Public Information Journalism as an Instrument of Public Education and Mass Mobilization and Quality News reporting as Core Duty of Journalism, Voicing, High-lighting for Effective Communication and Information Dissemination as high points of the programme.
