LUTHTHE Chief Managing Director (CMD) of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Chris Bode has expressed joy as the hospital sendoff its first set of graduates from the school Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET).

According to the CMD: “We are here to celebrate eighteen young Nigerians who are engineers on their own but graduating from one year professional course initiated by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH).”

He congratulated the FMoH, GE Healthcare Foundation and the Engineering World Health (EWH), for a job well done: “Suffice to say that we are already seeing the effect” he added.

The Director of the school of Biomedical Engineering in LUTH, Prof. Carmen Walker, also expressed her deep sense of pleasure at the ceremony, as she witness the dream to establish biomedical engineering in LUTH come to fruition: “We are actually making history today; because there was a dream, a dream because there was a need, a need to establish biomedical engineering here in LUTH. Today it is a reality“ she added.

She opined that no hospital can run or function properly without biomedical engineers: “If the medical equipment is not working properly, it doesn’t matter how good the doctors, nurses or surgeons are, they are only as good as the equipment they have.”

Speaking further, she noted that doctors and biomedical engineers needs each other for the betterment of the patient: “We need to work together for the common goal of saving lives; by saving equipment we save lives.”

She stated that the graduating students and the hospitals represented are breaking new grounds and raising standards for a better and safer medical equipment, so that no patient has to die or a surgery postponed due to faulty or malfunctioned medical equipment.
