Senior Partner, PUNUKA Attorney and Solicitors, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), has said there is need for Africa and indeed, Nigeria to keep up with the current upsurge in international arbitration, if the continent wishes to experience economic development.

He also emphasized on the importance of arbitrators to keep up to date on the latest development and insights in international arbitrators. He stated this during the press briefing on the fourth coming 2nd ICC Africa Regional Arbitration Conference slated for the 14th to 16th of May at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.

The conference is holding with the collaboration of both the Paris and Nigeria International Chambers of Commerce. Idigbe said the conference is aimed at furthering the upsurge in international arbitration that the African continent is currently experiencing.

He also stated that the target audience of the three day conference that cut across different sectors of the economy are: Arbitrators, Academics, Business professionals, Corporate Counsel, Legal directors, legal practitioners, Magistrates and Mediators. And it has a lineup of top class speakers and topical discussions that will provide an excellent opportunity to network and build skills.

“The conference is a must attend for Arbitrators Professionals who want to keep up to date on the latest development and insights in international arbitration. And it also promises to be a gathering of the world’s most experienced and renowned lawyers and Arbitrators”.

Speaking also on the theme for the conference, ‘Arbitration: Catalyst for Economic Growth’, the senior advocate said: “ICC has three main activities: rule setting, dispute resolution and policy advocacy. Because its member companies and association are themselves engaged in international business, ICC has unrivalled authority in making rules that govern the conduct of business across borders. Although, these rules are voluntary, they are observed in countless thousands transactions every day and have become part of international trade.

“Currently, 13 ICC commissions comprising experts from the private sector cover specialized fields of immediate concern to international business”. He also stated that all these activities are in fulfillment of the pledge in ICC’s constitution to further the development of an open world economy with the firm conviction that international commercial exchanges are conducive to both greater global prosperity and peace among nations.

Adding that, ICC Africa Regional conference will also generates conversations around the relationship between inward foreign investment in emerging markets in Africa, the type of disputes which may arise and the African experience in arbitration proceedings.

Idigbe also pointed out that there will be adequate arrangement for interpreters in French and other languages. The planning committee members includes: Boma Ozobia (OON), Mrs Doyin Rhodes-Vivour, Mr Chikweendu Madumere, Mrs Funke Adekoya (SAN), Mrs Dorothy Ufot (SAN) and others.
