The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) has partnered with several individuals and associations to support Tayo Aluko’s play, just an ordinary lawyer.

Speaking after the performance of the play in Lagos, the chairman of Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), Olumide Anthony Akpata, said that the association partnered the playwright to perform the play because it is interested on the well-rounded development of lawyers.

“It is not only about work but also about recreation that is well educating. This play is a story of the life of an exceptional Nigerian lawyer. We are looking at our young lawyers and we want to show them role models that will inspire them and this is an inspiring story.

“This is a one man act and we were all curious to see how it will go. It is truly exceptional and of international quality. This play is dedicated to the memory of a truly exceptional lawyer, Bankole Olumide Aluko, Senior Advocate of Nigeria. It took us through over thirty years of his life. For all these reasons and more, we are glad we supported him,” Akpata said.

Ikechukwu Uwanna, secretary, Lagos Branch of NBA, said he got curious when he saw the name of the play ‘Just an ordinary Lawyer,’ so he decided to know what informed the choice of the name.

“I am impressed with what I saw this evening. It showed a lot of class and brought back the memories of what motivated me to read law, the nobility of the profession and distinction,” Uwanna said.

Lilian Amah Aluko, Co-producer of the play said that Tayo Aluko has been doing one-man theatre for over ten years, adding that he currently has two new plays titled Call Mr. Robeson and Just an Ordinary Lawyer.

Aluko said it was the first time he was showing that particular play to the general audience. Her words: “Tayo wrote this play and dedicated it to his late brother. He is a Kings college old boy and this play is about Kings College Old Boy, who is the first black British lawyer that made it to the Bar.”

Tayo Aluko the playwright stated that he had always loved to act right from his primary school but did not want to practice full time considering the fact that it may not sustain him for a living.

According to him, he thought if he makes a living out of acting and writing plays, he wouldn’t enjoy it. According to him, he stumbled on the story of Robeson, when he studied it and decided to tell the story. He said, he went looking for playwrights to write the story and that after many years, he decided to do the writing himself.

“When I started performing it, my architecture business was going down the drain. At some point, my father told me that if I wanted to go into the profession full time, I had his blessings. Today I am happy my works are appreciated globally,” he enthused.
