Group seeks protection of Nigerians’ socio-economic rights

In order to address the scourge of poverty and slavery, the Executive Director, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), Comrade Buna Isiak has insisted that it is imperative for government to protect the socio-economic rights of Nigerians.

He noted that socio-economic rights of Nigerians is enshrined in the nations constitution, hence, it is expedient for authorities at the helms of affairs to ensure full compliance.Speaking on the theme: “Socio Economic Rights and the Twin evils of poverty and Slavery, Africa in Perspective”, he expressed serious concern over the present deplorable state of Nigerian prisons.

According to him, some inmates have spent 10 to 15 years without trial. Similarly, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Muiz Banire said democracy thrives in environment where the leaders are afraid of the people.

According to him, in countries where the reverse is the case, democracy is no longer in place. He also stressed the need for Nigerians to demand accountability from the leaders. “You must be able to ask questions on amount spent on projects starting from the ward level. It is your civic obligation,” he advised. He also urged comrades to go into politics in order to purge the polity of mediocrity and charlatans.

On his part, Rotimi Olowo, representing Shomolu Constituency, noted that injustice leads to poverty, adding that Nigerians should rise against injustice in the country. He added that Freedom of Information has also made it possible for Nigerians to ask questions concerning the performance of their leaders.
