Lagoon School promotes female participation in science subjects

To help female students develop interest in science-related subjects, the management of Lagoon School, Lekki, Lagos, an all-female secondary school recently organised a science quiz and project competition for select secondary school students in Lagos. 

The exercise, which was in three categories, engaged participants in core science theoretical practices and experiments.

Principal of the school, Noemi Garcia, in her remarks at the event highlighted the important role science plays in various fields of human endeavour, and how science addresses numerous societal challenges.

She cautioned against scientific experiments that violate human rights or seek to redefine nature.

Head of Science Department, Lagoon School (which facilitated the competition), Ngozi Agu, hinted that science would always play a pivotal role in a child’s upbringing and societal development.

At the end of contest, the host emerged winner in the project category.  Debirus College and Maryland Comprehensive High School emerged first and second runner-up respectively.  

In their respective presentations in the science project category, the team from Lagoon School, comprising: Ese Oyugbo, Kenechukwu Memeh and Tara Bond, demonstrated how smoking injurious the lungs.

With the use of solar panels and a motor, Debirus College team demonstrated how solar panels could be used to power motor vehicles and also illustrated the process of electroplating. 

Maryland Comprehensive High School proved that carbohydrate is also present in milk in its experiment.

In the quiz category, Lagoon School also came first, while Dansol High School and International School Lagos, clinched the first and second runner-up respectively.

Lagos Model College, Badore took the lead in table tennis; while Marywood College and Regan Memorial Baptist Girls High School emerged first and second runner-up respectively. All winners were presented with prizes and trophies.
