Flagging off the exercise at Tuga village, the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai said the birds’ destructive tendencies on cereal crops, especially rice are catastrophic anytime they paid visit.

He noted that due to abundance of rivers, lakes and marshes, the state has served as an adequate resting sites for the destructive birds and therefore, seasonal spray would be the only remedy for their extinction.

Dabai further stressed that the presence of the parasite birds doesn’t augur well for agricultural production and causing nightmare to the teeming rice farmers.

“This administration places high priority in the development of agricultural potentials to enhance food security, promotion of self reliance, poverty reduction and provides employment to the teeming unemployed youths”

He further disclosed that despite the Federal Government’s intervention in Quelea birds control, the government spends over N200m annually to fight the birds to protect farmers from incessant losses.

Speaking earlier, the Director of Produce in the state ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Muhammadu Adamu Dankawu, thanked government for the gesture, while describing the parasites as menace and dangerous.

Also speaking, the council chairman of Bagudo Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Dantani Zagga, commended the state government’s efforts in the annual exercise.
