Cornerstone Insurance Plc, recently held a one-day intensive training for staff and students of Fountain Heights Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos, where attendees were equipped with with life-saving skills that would enable them effectively handle medical emergencies within and outside the school premises.

The newly launched programme, “Safe Routes to School,” “Basic Life Support (BLS),” and “Basic First Aid Training,” all part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, would be replicated in other schools within the six education districts of the state.

Head, Brand Management, Cornerstone, Mr. Ademola Mafikuyomi, said the company embarked on the project following the realisation that children were the most vulnerable in the society.

He explained that the “Safe Routes to School” project involves the provision of safety infrastructure along accident-prone school routes and the establishment of safety clubs in schools where students would be taught preventive basic safety tips, with the support of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

“The BLS and Basic First Aid Training are aimed at equipping students and teachers with basic life support and first aid techniques for emergencies such as unconsciousness, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), choking while eating, sudden seizures, ingestion of poisonous or toxic substances, dislocation and fractures, bleeding from cuts and stabs, animal bites and stings, among others.

“Our aim is to protect the future, and our future is embedded in the children, and so if we don’t train them now to save their lives, then our future is mortgaged.”

Delivering the BLS and basic first aid training to participants, Director, Golden Hour Medics Limited, Dr. Ugochukwu Echendu, revealed that daily people die in the country due to lack of medical emergency personnel and infrastructure. “Children also die in schools for the same reason and since there is no record of such occurrences, they are overlooked.”

He said it was important for everyone to know how to give first aid to someone that is unconscious and not breathing.
