ICAN enlightens students on importance of studying accounting

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has urged students to take interest in studying accounting as they could end up being self-employed after graduation.

Speaking to a cross section of some students in Lagos recently during a programme tagged “Catch Them Young,” ICAN officials said the imperativeness of studying the course cannot be over emphasised. 

In his paper titled, “The Multi-Faceted Role of the Accountant,” Dr. Deji Awobotu, said catching the students young was a very vital project in the sense that once they were through with their secondary education and get into professional programmes like ICAN, they are bound to qualify as chartered accountant at a tender age.

“It also saves them from becoming nuisances in the society. They would be taught to observe the etiquette of the profession. Integrity would also be inculcated into them. At that point, they could rise to become chief finance officer (CFO) of organisations.
“Most businesses fail because friends and families take services without paying for them. In ICAN, the students would be taught to separate their business from themselves,” he added.
