History crucial to national development, says Adebule

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule has identified history as necessary ingredient for national growth and development, saying it enables the younger generation to learn from the pitfalls while assisting them to build on the successes of the past.

Speaking at the Lagos State Current Affairs Quiz Competition held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Adebule said the competition has brought global history and immediate happenings to the consciousness of our youth.

At the end competition, the star prize went to Angus Memorial Senior High School, Somolu while the Lagos State Senior Model College, kankon and Unity Senior High School, Oshodi emerged first and second runners up respectively.

The Junior Secondary category was won by Lagos State Model Junior, Igbokuta with Government College, Owutu and Eko Junior College, Orile-Agege trailing in that order.

St, Francis Nursery and Primary School, Kosofe won the star prize in the Primary School category beating Ladi-Lak Nursery and Primary School to the second position and Owoseni Nursery/Primary School, Oshodi/Isolo emerged third.

An elated Adebule said, “The overt display of knowledge by our amiable children in all facets of life- science & technology, humanities, art & craft, politics, economy and Information Technology is a pointer to the fact that we belong to the global village and we are a major player who cannot afford to be left behind in the scheme of things”.

She noted that the competition, like Governor’s Quiz, Schools Debate and the Spelling Bee competitions would produce brilliant students who will study courses of their choice in various Institutions of higher learning both at home and abroad.

Adebule implored pupils and students to shun all vices such as hooliganism, rape, examination malpractice, alcoholism, and drug abuse, which she described as distractions, that hold dire consequences in the future.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of education, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye recalled that the competition, a brainchild of the Deputy Governor was meant to redirect the minds of the pupils/students towards keeping abreast with happenings in their immediate environment and the world at large; have a sense of history and develop penchant for reading wider and broadening their knowledge.
