Coalition of Civil Societies has appealed to all Houses of Assembly (SHA), particularly Nasarawa State’s, to support the local government (LG) autonomy in the ongoing constitutional amendment process or risk reelection next year.

They made the call in Lafia during a workshop for delegates of different civil society and the media from Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau and Kogi States.
According to them, autonomy of LG is the only way that would guarantee the inclusiveness of the principle of true democracy which is in line with global best practice.

According to Aloku Daniel, a delegate from Plateau, they wants all governors and members of the assembly to look beyond their positions today which are not permanent and support the independence of LG.

He argued that the autonomy of LG if granted would bring stability to the tenure of council officials and ensure rapid
development at the local level.

“Governors and assembly members should support this amendment in the interest of the general public as way of reciprocation.
“You should know that your tenure of office is definite. Therefore you would live office some day, so it is better you all use this opportunity to write your names in gold.”

He therefore, appealed to the masses to collect their voters card ahead of 2019 general election in order to vote out any politician that refuses to support the LG autonomy.

Similarly, Idris Liki, a delegate from Kogi and Abdulaziz Bako from Nasarawa, called on all chapters of NLC, NUT and NULGE among others to use this opportunity to support the independence of LGAs.

The duo said that, the argument in some quarters that funds would be embezzled if LG gets autonomy was baseless, adding that now that governors are council in charge, is there no embezzlement?

The group called on states assemblies that have not adopted the autonomy of LG to imitate the good examples of those that have, in their best interest.
