The proprietress of Agricultural and Entrepreneurial Skills Development Initiative for Women (AESDIW), Dr Modupe Ogunniyi, has canvassed more vocational courses for Nigerian women.

Ogunniyi, while identifying the potentialities of women, said if their talents are appropriately harnessed, the development would boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

She said: “Women in Nigeria enjoy the larger human population. They are healthy and are always ready to contribute their quotas. But sadly enough, Nigeria has no space for them in its economic plans. They need to be encouraged by providing them with vocational training and tools after such training.

“The nation seems to have forgotten the skills in these women. They mainly produce our oil palm, locust beans, pottery, tying and dying, embroidery, cooking and planting in the cultivated land. Not many people know, for instance, that women’s backbones don’t suffer the same ache as that of men during planting.”

No fewer than 30 beneficiaries participated in the skill acquisition and empowerment programme organised and sponsored by the AESDIW for women and youths in the Kwara South Senatorial district.

The programme revolved around the production of organic skin and hair care products and was held in Omu Aran, headquarters of Irepodun local government area of the state. It drew participants across the six councils forming the senatorial district.

According to Ogunniyi, it was organised for the identified vulnerable individuals who had little or no means of livelihood.

The programme was aimed at inculcating entrepreneurial skills and business know-how such that the women and youths in the district would be empowered to improve their standards of living.
