UNILAG Arabic School graduates 29 students

The University of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) Arabic and Islamic School, has successfully graduated 29 students in Qur’an education.The graduands, whom were also equipped with set of rules governing recitation of the Holy Qur’an and Islamic etiquettes, were awarded with certificate of completion during the 22nd Walimah graduation ceremony held at UNILAG Central Mosque, Lagos.

The Chairman of UMC, Prof. Lai Olurode, said the Arabic school was established for the purpose of impacting Islamic knowledge on children at the early stage of their life.“The Arabic school was founded out of the need to impact Islamic knowledge on children of Muslim founding fathers of the University. But due to high quality of Islamic education offered in the Madrasah (school), there was rise in population growth of the Arabic school, which poses the challenge of over crowding because children from outside the community also attend,” he said.

He noted that, it is imperative on every Muslim parent to expose their children to early Islamic education due to challenges posed by globalization and modernisation on the youth.“We live in an era where technology has taken over the role of socialization. It is very difficult to socialise the young ones into the norms and values of their parents, because there are so many media of socialization like the social media, radio, television and mobile phone where they got hooked”, he said.

Olurode advised Muslim parents to go extra mile to ensure their children retained the Islamic identity by putting them in school that is Islam-friendly.“We need to compliment the western education of our children with Arabic learning because it is very difficult to find an Islamic-friendly school. Out of 100 good schools, I am sure you may not be able to find one that is Islamic-friendly. It therefore, required that parents should strengthen all the ingredient of socialization for them in order to be convinced that the identity they hold onto is valuable,” he said.
