THE Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) has decried high rate of unemployment among youths in the country, describing it as a threat to national development.

The group, during its first General Assembly held in Ibadan last weekend, noted that Nigerian youths, especially those of the Southwest,

who possess qualitative credentials are unfortunately jobless for no fault of theirs.

One of the major highlights of the one-day event was the election of Chief Saka Olayiwola Babalola as the group’s new president to pilot the affairs of the Muslim organization in the next three years.

In the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and endorsed by the newly elected president, Chief Babalola and Executive Secretary, MUSWEN, Prof. Daud Noibi, the group called on the Federal and State governments to as a matter of urgency, embark on massive training and provision of tools for Nigerian youths of various categories to enable them become entrepreneurs in their own right and thereby propel their economic wherewithal as a way of curbing the spate of idleness that engenders insecurity in the country.

In view of the current dwindling income from crude price crash, it also urged government to float a veritable and effective agricultural policy

to engage millions of Nigerian youths in agricultural activities as a way of curbing unnecessary restiveness among the youths.

MUSWEN is the umbrella body for all State Muslim Councils/ Communities and Organizations in the Southwest of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the body has condemned the bloody and destructive activities of Boko Haram insurgents who are masquerading under the garb of Islam to perpetrate unprecedented atrocities in some parts of the country.

Insisting that Islam stands for peace in all its ramifications, it described such atrocities as grossly antithetical to the tenets of Islam and called the

perpetrators renegades.

Other resolutions reached at the meeting included the need for the Federal Government “to quickly devise a means not only of addressing the fundamental causes of insecurity in the land but also in rescuing the Chibok children criminally abducted by Boko Haram insurgents.”

It also enjoined Muslims in the Southwest region  organize a special prayer in all Mosques on Sunday, February 8, 2015 for a successful conduct of the forthcoming elections and peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians now and in future.

MUSWEN urged Muslims in the Southwest to endeavour to obtain their permanent voters’ cards in order to participate effectively in the current democratic process through the forthcoming general elections.

The group however stated that certain non-Muslim groups in the Southwest who have been parading themselves as the representatives of the region to the exclusion of the multitudinous Muslims in the region, (as demonstrated in the nomination of delegates to the last National Conference on the political future of Nigeria where Muslim were totally marginalized) should stop such arrogation henceforth.
