A call from the pulpit has gone to Muslims across the country to be very active in politics and lead by exhibiting exemplary conducts as enjoined in the Holy Quran and taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

An Islamic Scholar and Lagos Home Affairs Commissioner, Dr. AbulHakeem AbdulLateef, who spoke as a guest speaker at the 25th Open Air Lecture of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Akoka Branch (Division II), in Obadia, Akoka, Lagos, said leadership “is not to be seen as a position of superiority, but as a trial: a burden to serve humanity with the fear of God and in total humility in service of humanity.”

Speaking on the topic “Leadership by Example”, AbdulLateef said everyone is a leader, but anyone who “aspires to lead others, must be able to lead oneself by being in total control of, and use all what Allah has bestowed on him in ways directed by the Quran, “the Ultimate Life-Manual.”

Such person, he said, must be able to lead his mouth, his knowledge, wisdom, wealth and other worldly possessions to secure the pleasure of God for himself, and bring better lives to his subordinates. He thereafter enjoined Muslims to uphold and transmit good moral and values to the children, spouses and other members of the family at the home front, and to lead the society with good conscience and noble intentions. He added that such an individual must also impact positively on the society, engender peace and development and bring succour, goodness and happiness to the citizenry; otherwise, such Muslim leaders “may not” receive the pleasure of God.

According to him, “Allah does good to everyone at all times; whether rich or poor, short or tall, man or woman or what ever other attributes or conditions, God loves us equally. When we wish and pray for something or aim for certain position, but such is unattained, it does not mean that God has not answered our prayer; it only means that there are better plans for us. Only Allah, knows what is good for man.”

AbdulLateef urged Muslims not to see positions as do-or-die affairs, as only Almighty God, the ultimate decider, omnipresence and omnipotence, puts man in a position. Man, he said might wish and pray for a certain position or has a plan, but Almighty Allah must subscribe to such, for it to come to fruition. Allah, he said might do this by using someone, some people or certain circumstances to achieve this.

“Muslims should, therefore, not cast aspersion or be jealous of those who have attained certain positions, for such are trials, as Allah will make the occupiers of positions account for all actions they take while in such positions; Allah will not ask you to account for what he did not give you,” said the cleric. AbdulLateef said Prophet Muhammad his an exemplary leader that all Muslims must emulate with love. “Follow him, and I will love you and forgive your sins, ”said the cleric quoting Quran.
