Masari laments menace among women

As the abuse of drugs among women and youth in Kaduna is on the rise, Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called for the arrest and prosecution of drug hawkers to curtail drug misuse and abuse.Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari has also described as worrisome reported cases of drugs abuse among women, with call for urgent measures by stakeholders to address the situation.

The association in conjunction with Al-Hidayah Charity Organization called on community stakeholders, parent and guidance to crosscheck the sales of drugs in pharmaceutical stores within their communities to prevent selling of control drugs to children.Speaking at a retreat organized to sensitize youth and community at Rigasa community in Kaduna on the dangers of drug abuse, the Health Chairperson of the association, Pharmacist Aisha Ishaq Tukur, said it’s imperative for government to impose a  ban on drug hawkers for a  total clampdown on drug abuse.

According to her, “communities should be conscious of who is opening drug store within their vicinity. We are also calling on schools to check their students while they are in school.”Speaking to journalists shortly after the retreat, the secretary of Al -Hidayah Charity Organization, Hajiyah Zainab Aliyu Garba, said the menace of drug abuse calls for stakeholders and community’s involvement, as the influence of drug abuse is beyond parental control.

While asserting that an idle man is a devil’s workshop, she disclosed that the organization has completed plans to empower some jobless youth among the participants.

Meanwhile, FOMWAN also celebrated World Hijab Day, calling on all Muslim women and children to embrace the wearing of hijab for covering and protection of their bodies, as prescribed by the religion of Islam.According to the body’s leader from Kaduna chapter, Hajiya Badiyat Sa’eed Sodangi, using of Hijab by adolescent Muslim girls and women will curtail social vices, particularly the prevention of men from falling into temptation upon sighting women, once their body is covered.

Masari, speaking during distribution of empowerment packages to 2,500 women from Katsina senatorial zone, said relevant agencies working to check drugs abuse say 50 out of 100 women carry drugs in their bags to ceremonies. He said women were supposed to be responsible and family keepers, and always remember that they were ‘first school of inculcating moral behaviour to the children,’ and should therefore, not abdicate their responsibility.”

The coordinator of the programme, Bilkisu Saulawa, said similar packages had been given to women in Funtua and Daura senatorial zones, and that the Katsina event was concluding part of the exercise.
