First class law graduate receives ECU’s lifetime achievement award

Evangelical Christian Union (ECU), an alumni fellowship, has honoured first class law graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Oluwadunni Oni, for her academic excellence.

Oni, who graduated with second-class, upper-division in her first degree, was among the top 10 students in her class.

She proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Yola campus, for the compulsory Bar Part II course, where she graduated with first-class honours and was awarded six prizes, including prizes for the best female graduating student and the second overall best graduating student.

Presenting the award at a reception organised in her honour, ECU President, Alumni Fellowship, Austin Awulonu, commended Oni for doing Great Ife proud and as well as the Fellowship.

Awulonu said: “Oni is a thoroughbred ECU daughter. Her father was a member of the Evangelical Christian Union (ECU) Fellowship during his days as a student on the beautiful campus of Great Ife.

“At a time our country is bedeviled by do-as-I say but not as I do leaders; when our youths are branded lazy and are left on their own to navigate the labyrinthine paths of life; when opportunities for the girl-child is at a costly premium in Nigeria; when righteousness is the last thing on the minds of many and when unemployment is eroding the motivation to reach for academic excellence among our teeming young population, Oni stepped out to show us that we still can overcome by righteousness and dint of hard work.”

Responding, Oni said: “I know how much efforts I put in, so I feel very blessed to have won those prizes.”
Oni disclosed that her dad had a huge influence over her choice of course.

She went on: “I was in Art class; I was leaning towards International Relations but I was still indecisive, so he spoke to me, and I realised there were a lot of opportunities in that field.”

And because I like to analyze and think of things physically, I felt like I could find my feet if I studied law. And again, because of how wide it is, I felt I would be more open to career opportunities as opposed to, maybe, journalism or International Relations.”
