ExxonMobil rewards pupils for academic excellence

ExxonMobil-an-American-oil-giantAs part of efforts to enthrone academic excellence in Akwa Ibom State, ExxonMobil Nigeria has introduced another initiative aimed at rewarding studious pupils, with the launch of ExxonMobil Academic Excellence Reward Programme.

General Manager, Joint Venture Operations of the company, Mr. John Arkley, who spoke at the launch of the programme in Eket, said the initiative is aimed at encouraging excellence in public primary schools in the core oil communities of Eket, Esit Eket, Ibeno and Onna council areas of the state.

Represented by a maintenance manager in the firm, Mr. Mike Attah, Arkley said, “This programme is aimed at supporting and encouraging excellence in public primary schools by identifying high performers, recognising and encouraging the achievers. The programmee is also a demonstration of our commitment to the development of education in Akwa Ibom State.

“Through this initiative, ExxonMobil will provide school bags with mathematics sets, pencil poachers, water bottles and exercise books to the best 10 academically performing pupils in each class from primary one to six across 85 schools,” the ExxonMobil chief said.

He continued, “ExxonMobil has a long history of partnership with the government and people of Akwa Ibom State in the area of education. In the last four years, we have committed over N57m on the NNPC/MPN JV secondary scholarship targeting indigent students from Akwa Ibom state.

“In addition to that, N4bn has bee spent on NNPC/ MPN JV students. It may interest you to note that 50 percent of this amount or N2billion has gone to students from Akwa Ibom State,” Arkley informed.

The state Education Commissioner, Mr. Aniekan Akpan, thanked ExxonMobil for its consistency in supporting and partnering with the state to provide qualitative education.

He expressed optimism that with the development, children in public schools can compete favourable with their contemporaries in the private sector.

“Government acknowledges and appreciates these partnerships and commends the effort of organisations like ExxonMobil and others that are lending support in various forms to our children. Together, we will leave positive footprints in the sands of time and a good legacy for generations of Akwa Ibom children,” he said.
