The Chief Executive Officer, Standard Mandate International (SMI), Mr Nelson Ayodele has posited that for teachers to deliver effectively in classrooms, they must have strong passion for the subjects they teach.

Speaking at the 2017 National Heads of Schools Summit in Ogun State recently, Ayodele noted that ‘professional competence is nothing except it is graced with genuine passion for the people we direct our professional practice to.

“The history of education and teaching is replete with stories and examples of school owners, school ‘leaders’, teachers among many others who lack the natural connection to their jobs as opposed to an educational administrator who has a sense of calling which is often expected of an ideal teacher.’

The SMI boss who spoke on the theme, ‘Passionate leadership: Balancing competence with passion”, further added, ‘taking a cue from the countries that make up the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it could be seen that one of the principles that distinguish school administration in the new millennium is the principle of collaboration, interdependence and partnership. This, in a way is a sort of “carryover” of the principle of corporate governance which the OECD countries have for a while, promoted among their member countries.’

The facilitators: Dr Femi Ogunsanya, Dr Segun Odegbami and Mrs Folashade Adefisayo unanimously agreed that unwavering passion is an important attribute of a good leader.

Dr Ogunsanya also urged school administrators to have succession plans, saying staffs are expected to be groomed for various posts in the school.’

On his part, Odegbami stated that leaders must be focused, determined, committed and never give up’.

Similarly, Adefisayo also stressed the importance of building trustworthy relationships. According to her, ‘genuine relationships with learners create lasting impact in the lives of learners”.

On her part, Mrs Oyeyinka Banjo, Regional Director (West Africa) for ‘One million teachers’ said the scheme was launched in Canada this year with the aim of continually putting teachers on the learning platform, improve their skills and also reward them.’

While sharing his experience from the summit, Mr Badru Adeniran from Ansar-ud-deen College, Surulere said, ‘I have learnt that leadership goes with passion. I also leant about intrinsic values and core competency level. I have also understood that passion is stronger than intrinsic value.’
